It was just after eight pm on a Friday and though we were promised a dry and fresh night, it hadn't given up on pouring! Ray and me were resting going over the weekend's footy, waiting for the seventh telephone call to come in. Before long we had a call from a young lady on a company trip who had gone to the Esso filling garage in Bowlish and filled the wrong fuel in a diesel work's Volkswagen Tiguan lease car in error. The poor lady was rather distressed it seemed, saying "I simply cannot believe I've destroyed the vehicle! I'm so used to putting unleaded in my petrol vehicle I had did not remember that I was driving a diesel!" I just asked her to relax and not to fret, and also that these things unfortunately do happen. She was able to move the car to a safe area and, as it was no more than a few miles off from us, we could arrive at the woman right away. The incorrect fuel was drained and she could once again go back to the Premier Inn she was residing at. Despite the fact we got pretty drenched, it was all worthwhile seeing her drive away relaxed and much less anxious. One more misfuel correction in Somerset done well in my mind!

The 3 things you SHOULD know about fuel contamination!

AdBlue In Diesel

Throughout Somerset we have encountered a lot more cases of AdBlue contamination wherein an individual has put AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is mostly a result of drivers being unsure of the way to use it (take note: it's not a fuel additive), and in part due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly next to each other on the car.

Now, what exactly is the matter with putting AdBlue in the diesel car?

Because AdBlue is mostly ionised water, it's as bad as pouring water into your tank. Diesel and water really do not mix in any way and trying to run a diesel car on water will not work. Furthermore, the urea is fairly corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is prone to crystalising, damaging injectors and filters. If you poured AdBlue in a fuel tank drain it as soon as possible. And absolutely never crank the car - not even to move it to a parking area. Assuming you did start the vehicle you will probably have to have the whole fuel system cleaned and filters changed out.

Phone us if you are a victim of AdBlue contamination. We can certainly help. We are Specialists in dealing with contaminated fuel and will be able to take care of all kinds of AdBlue contamination.

Motorboat Fuel Drains

If there is the incorrect fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most usually water contaminated or degraded fuel) in a boat we can certainly remove it. Providing the boat is either dry-docked, or secured close enough to an automobile parking spot we can gain access to the tanks and remove the fuel. We have undertaken quite a few fuel drains at marinas and boatyards in the uk.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
